Great Deal~Very Good and Simple
I got these radios for about $40. there not bad. I havent been able to really try them. I think they could go sicks miles in an open space. They are very simple(but yet add some very cool features like call rings and scan) and provide some fun as well. For spring break im going to Florida so my family is going to take them there!

Pros:
Good Clear Voice
Easy to Use
Recharable
Simple
Cons:
Might lose your range after about 3 miles.(But what Wakie-Talkie lives up to its real range?)
Great for:
Bikes
All family occasions
Parks
Six Flags( those places)
Big Buildings
Trips
Car to Car talking.
Not good for:
Going to Safeway and asking your wife what she wants.
Getting directions from others(one house to a car)
Basically, long range stuff.

Field tested - Excellent!
In the past, I used another brand (begins with an M: T5420's) for skiing and fishing. While those models worked well, they only got about 8 hours on 3 AAA batteries (each unit). Over a weekend trip, this caused a problem.
The Unident's I now have are truly leaps ahead of other models I've used. The rechargeable battery option is perfect and I found the range to be more than adequate. (My family used 4 units over an entire ski resort and had no problems at all with reception: moutain terrain, etc and they worked great).
I highly recommend these units and can speak from experience from using other manufacturers models.
Hope this helped...

For my purposes, these are GREAT!
After extensive testing, the library where I work switched to these radios based on the price and features. We use about 20 of these to keep people in touch as they move all around a VERY large, two story building in a downtown urban environment. Because they are rechargable, we save a ton of money on batteries (our old radios went through a set every 2 weeks). As for clarity - we have a very strong signal no matter where we are in the library building or on the grounds (an entire city block). The concrete of the building doesn't even keep us from communicating via these radios.
Though I cannot comment on the claim that they will reach six miles (because we don't use them like that), I can say that we enjoy very clear voice conversations with no significant "interference" from outside radios. For our purposes these radios have been perfect!

Great Radio for the Price
People who talk about having only 1 mile of range on their talkie don't really understand the way Radio Waves work. All GMRS and FRS radios are on the 462mhz band, what that means to the avg user is that it's pretty much line of site. If you can see the person you will be able to talk to them. Now you will be able to have about a mile or so of trees things like that in between you and the other person. If you have hills and valleys between you and the person you are trying to talk too, you will have problems hearing them if the hill or mountain is between you and them. At this frequency radio waves don't bend much at all, that's why it's going to be line of sight. Power will help somewhat a 1watt talkie won't have the range that a 3watt one has, but it's not going to be very much in terms of distance.
People who say this talkie or that talkie works better just by range aren't explaining what their test conditions are, so you have no idea what is between them and the other person. If you wanted to compare radios like this....you have to have other radios in the test also, you can't tell anything from just one set / brand of radios in this kind of test.
Simple rule for gmrs/frs radios, if you can see the general area the other person is you should be able to talk to them. If one of you is elevated your range will increase dramatically. That's why they put tv/radio towers on hills and mountains. One mile is typical range for almost all gmrs radios that are transmitting 500mw to 1watt. This same one watt would be just as good if you were 10 miles apart and able to see the area where the other person is.
It's not the wattage that is important, for gmrs radios, it's the feature set on each radio that should be the main draw to a particular radio, not just someone saying I can talk only 1 mile with this radio. Want to learn about radio waves and radios, this site will keep you busy for eons. www.qrz.com
